Soon after Henry Hudson's first voyage up the "River of Mountains" in 1609, Dutch farmers settled in Greene County for its fertile ground and majestic Catskill Mountain scenery. Today, visitors can walk in the footsteps of Rip Van Winkle and Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School of Art, visiting sites like Kaaterskill Falls, New York State's highest cascading waterfall, and the Bronck Museum in Coxsackie, a complex of buildings that includes the oldest surviving Dutch Colonial home in the Hudson Valley and a unique 13-sided barn. Historic 18th century villages with Dutch ancestry dot the riverfront and picturesque countryside.
